“Philip Morris is undergoing an unprecedented transformation. Ten years ago we announced our vision of a smoke-free future and, thanks to science and technology, we are well on our way to achieving it. This is the biggest change in our history and we are doing it because we believe it is the right thing to do for both our consumers and for society as a whole.
Our commitment to innovation and change has led us to develop science-based heat-not-burn and smoke-free products to replace cigarettes. Today, we are proud to say that, in 2023, the net revenues of our heat-not-burn tobacco products exceeded those of Marlboro.
At a national level, we are working to put Spain on the same growth path as neighbouring countries such as Italy and Greece. To do this, we need to tackle the misinformation that confuses Spanish smokers and hinders our transformation. The smoker should know that smoking is the most harmful form of tobacco use - inhaling the toxic smoke released when tobacco is burnt - and that if we remove combustion from the equation, we remove the main cause of smoking-related diseases.
Our goal is to accelerate the transition to smoke-free and non-combustion alternatives such as IQOS, our main focus in tobacco heating devices, and to leave the conventional cigarette behind. We work every day to help people understand that cigarettes and smoke-free products are completely different. Our ability to respond and adapt to change will continue to be tested over time, but I am confident that the quality of our teams and the strength of our purpose will enable our organisation to achieve our goal of making the cigarette a museum piece as quickly as possible.
In parallel, our ESG strategy continues to evolve as we seek to address the impact of our products. We see sustainability as a form of growth and innovation and are committed to creating a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace. As a result, our affiliate in Spain has received the independent ‘Equal Salary’ certification, recognising our commitment to equal pay for men and women.
Only through constructive engagement will we be able to accelerate the pace of change and complete our transformation for good.
