Philip Morris Spain is one of the leading tobacco companies in the Spanish market. Present in the country since 1971, it currently has two offices (in Madrid and Las Palmas) and a team of 1,000 employees.

Philip Morris International (PMI), which owns iconic brands such as Marlboro, is leading the transformation of the tobacco industry to build a smoke-free future based on better alternatives to cigarettes backed by science. Under this premise, in 2016 Philip Morris Spain launched the heated tobacco device IQOS on the Spanish market. Instead of burning tobacco, IQOS heats it, eliminating combustion and the smoke that is the main cause of smoking-related diseases.

As well as Philip Morris Spain’s head office, Madrid is also home to the Philip Morris International Service Centre, which provides support to all the multinational’s affiliates.

Our commitment to tobacco heating devices

Quitting tobacco and nicotine altogether is the best decision a smoker can make. Existing policies and achievements in tobacco control, both regarding prevention and cessation, should continue. However, despite these efforts, there are almost nine million adult smokers in Spain today. For this large group of smokers who will otherwise continue to smoke, there is a third option: smoke-free alternatives such as heated tobacco products.

IQOS heats the tobacco to a controlled temperature rather than burning it, thereby preventing combustion. This product is aimed at adult smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke. Our smoke-free products are currently available in 92  markets, including Spain.
In Spain, we have six IQOS boutiques, in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Málaga and Las Palmas.

Committed to Extremadura and the Canary Islands

Our commitment to the region of Extremadura is reflected in our commitment with tobacco growers, stretching back to 1992. We have implemented a program of best agricultural practices to improve tobacco quality and productivity, reduce CO2 emissions, save energy, and improve leaf traceability throughout the whole process.

Over the last decade, Philip Morris has invested approximately EUR 230 million in the purchase of tobacco from Extremadura. This commitment was reinforced with the creation in 2021 of its main digital information service center for users of heat-not-burn tobacco devices in Spain, which employs 120 people, 85 percent of them from Extremadura. In addition, Philip Morris Spain also operates a digital service center employing 15 people in Almendralejo, Extremadura, which supports tobacconists throughout Spain.

Philip Morris is also present in the Canary Islands, where it recently relocated part of its cigarette production with an investment of EUR 15 million, creating 120 jobs, and making a significant contribution to the region’s industrial sector.

Equal salary and an inclusive culture at Philip Morris Spain

Philip Morris Spain has been certified as an “Equal Salary” employer since 2019, an independent certification which recognises our commitment to paying men and women equal pay for equal work.

We are the first company in Spain to receive this award, which is a milestone in creating an inclusive work environment with a balance between men and women. In 2018, 40 percent of Philip Morris Spain’s top positions were already occupied by women, ahead of Philip Morris International, which reached that target in 2022.

For us, the combination of inclusion and diversity in the workplace is a key factor in the transformation of the company.

We are committed to being a company that draws strength from diversity and promotes an inclusive working environment, particularly for women. Find out how we promote diversity, inclusion and equal pay for men and women.
